I like to take a break from Facebook once a year
I like to take a break from Facebook once a year.
There are only so many insightful posts a man can read about politics and the dead celebrity of the week before he starts to think his friends are morons.
October may have to be the month for my Facebook fast. My news feed has been peppered with adults in Halloween costumes. So far I’ve seen a middle-aged Strawberry Shortcake, an overweight kitty-cat and a Batman with a belly.
The only time my grandfathers wore costumes was when the U.S. Marine Corps handed them out.
Not us. Nope. When the clock strikes October, the race is on to see who can fit into a pirate suit and post it on Facebook first.
Americans will spend $2.8 billion on Halloween-wear this year, with $1.4 billion of that amount on adult costumes, as 75 million alleged grown-ups will dress up for the holiday, according to the National Retail Federation.
According to the NRF, a record two-thirds of Americans will buy costumes, and adults have gone super-creative, with the Top 5 in order being: witch, animal, Batman character, pirate, zombie.
Aside from frat parties to meet women and office parties to feign group cohesion, and we can’t forget nerd culture — those people who live for Renaissance Faire season and 40 or 50 comic book conferences a year — why are we doing this?
I’m an armchair psychologist.
For women, it’s continuing the fairy tale thing, or at the very least another occasion to compete and launch insults behind each other’s backs. Whatever the reason, women will play dress-up and troll Facebook for likes every Halloween. Rawrrrrr! Go get ‘em, sexy!

Some men, who lack wit and boldness, take Halloween as an opportunity to walk on the wild side, but naturally it’s behind a mask.
Then there’s Crazy Eddie. Every group of friends has a Crazy Eddie. You can count on him to wear something crazy for Halloween, and it’s usually offensive to liberals. Crazy Eddie will dress up like a terrorist, stick his girlfriend in a burqa, post a picture online and the Buzzfeed crowd will call it “the worst thing on the Internet” that day.
When liberal men dress up for Halloween, it’s ironic and political, so there goes all the fun.
But enough of my armchair analysis. In search of analysis from professionals, I phones what I thought was the Psychology Department at Cal State Long Beach and spoke with Dr. Mahmoud Wagdy.
“People are looking for any occasion for celebration,” Wagdy said. “People are looking for anything that makes them happy and changes the routine of everyday life.”
This seemed like a legitimate answer until I asked Wagdy for his title, and discovered he is a professor of electrical engineering. Apparently I dialed the wrong number.
“But I read a lot about psychology and I know it very well,” he assured.
And he won’t be in costume this Halloween: “I don’t need anything to make me more happy,” he said.

Halloween preparation hits Mt. Pleasant early
Not only did Mt. Pleasant experience an influx of heat this past summer, it also experienced an influx of Halloween costume stores.
The Halloween Store, located behind the Mission Mall on South Mission Street, opened up about August 21.
Manager Phyllis Ramirez said this is the earliest the store has opened.
“We’re usually not open until after Labor Day,” she said. “We’re a college town, we decided we want to get our foot in the door.”
Ramirez said that this will be The Halloween Store’s second year at its present location, but the Bay City franchise has had a presence in Mt. Pleasant for 15 years.
“We always aim for by campus, and we’re not the only one who comes into town usually,” Ramirez said. “We vie for locations.”
The Halloween Store’s Assistant Manager Erica Aasved said her store offers “everything,” including men, women and children’s costumes, leggings, tutus, decor, fake
weapons and masks, among other things.
Claudia Joslin, co-owner of Halloween Central, said that while her store at 2014 S. Mission Street specializes in pre-packaged costumes, and goes through between 2,500
and 3,000 of them a season, it also offers hats, shoes, accessories, props, pet costumes and make-up, among other things.
The only thing the store doesn’t stock is decorations, she said.
“None of the big scary stuff,” she laughed.
While a lot of Halloween Central’s customers are students, Joslin said she does see a fair amount of community members stop by to browse the offerings.
Joslin said Halloween Central has been located at its Stadium Mall location for about four years.
Prior to that, she said, the costumes were sold at Heart Strings and Fun Things downtown before it closed down.
Unlike The Halloween Store, Joslin said, Halloween Central doesn’t see the value in opening early.
The store opened Labor Day, she said, and business won’t really pick up until October starts.
Most of the shoppers now are just browsing while they’re in the area, Joslin said.
The store is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Fans of ics, gaming, cosplay and more have a blast at StocktonCon
Aside from Halloween, a pop-culture convention is about the only place you’ll see the likes of Capt. America rubbing shoulders with an entire family of Dragon Ball Z
characters.
Such was the case early this month when the third annual StocktonCon was held at the Stockton Arena.
StocktonCon is a convention that spreads pop culture to attendees of all ages. As families made their way in, dedicated gamers, ic and anime fans showed off their
cosplay costumes.
In the lobby were a variety of vendor tables, selling ic-book-based items such as board games and action figures. There also were tables set up for family members to
sit and draw ics together!
Inside the packed arena, artist booths displayed magnificent artwork, and various items were sold throughout the arena. ic-book collectors purchased ics and artwork
from exhibitors. Anime fans got the chance to purchase merchandise from all of their favorite titles. “Attack On Titan” anime wall scrolls were popular, along with
Hatsune Miku dolls and plushies.
Enochs High School student Pier Kang said he was excited about seeing the cosplay. “I like to watch a lot of anime, and it was interesting to see all these cosplayers
dressed up.” Pier himself cosplayed as a ninja from “Naruto.”
Outside the Arena, StocktonCon hosted Q&A panels with speakers. Among one of them was the voice-acting crew of the world’s most-played video game, “League of
Legends.” Voice actors included Erik Braa (Draven), Doug Boyd (Twitch), Gavin Hammon (Varus), Rashida Clendenin (Karma), Cia Court (Vi) and Adam Harrington (Shaco).
Hosted in the University Plaza Hotel Ballroom, the panel talked about life as voice actors and what it was like acting for “League of Legends.”
“It takes talent, persistence and time,” Boyd said. “It just takes time. If you have talent but you don’t wear out your shoes and knock on doors and market
yourself, you won’t get anywhere.”
Braa shared similar advice. “It just takes time. If you want to do anything, do it for 10,000 hours – odds are by then, you’re a professional. Find a way to record,
go in, and just record, record, record. Listen to yourself. Try different things, create new characters. Live and breathe at that character.”
Clendenin added: “I think that you have to decide. If you want to bee a voice actor, decide and don’t let anything stand in your way.”
San Joaquin Delta College student Danielle Broadway was inspired by the “League of Legends” panel. “I’m interested in the professional voice-acting world. It a
very private, closed-off career, so for people to share what they know is a huge opportunity,” she said
StocktonCon was a fantastic family event. Specialists shared their stories and experiences, and friends and family got to experience the pop-culture world firsthand.
